The 43rd National Stereoscopic Association Convention

2017 3D-Con & ISU Congress

August 8-14, 2017 • Hotel Irvine Jamboree Center • Irvine, CA

Local Information and Things to Do

August is the warmest month in Irvine, and the average temperatures range from a low of 60°F (15.8°C) to 90°F (32°C). Rain is virtually non-existent at this time of the year. It can get cool at night, sometimes dipping into the high 50s. On hot days, it is cool near the ocean, which is only 20 minutes away.

Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse will occur on August 21, 2017, exactly one week after the end of our convention. The path of eclipse totality extends all the way across the continental United States, from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, it covers tremendously diverse territory, including relatively large cities, as well as many wide open, unpopulated areas. These regions vary greatly in terms of weather, which affects the likelihood of clouds interfering with eclipse viewing, as well as ease of access and availability of lodging. Following are some web resources which should allow those interested to determine where they might best view this spectacular celestial event. If you want to extend your trip to include the eclipse, look into making your reservations as soon as possible. Hotels in many of the smaller, well placed cities along the eclipse path are already sold out.

South Coast Plaza, a renowned international destination for shopping and dining, celebrates 50 years of quality. South Coast Plaza will mark its 50th anniversary throughout 2017 with exclusive collaborations with global luxury brands, arts partnerships, special events, exhibitions, fashion shows, and more.

Irvine Spectrum Center, one of Orange County's most energized shopping experiences, brings together a diverse collection of over 130 specialty stores, restaurants and entertainment venues. Beautiful courtyards and fountains adorn this vibrant, open-air center, which features Nordstrom, Target, H&M, Edwards Irvine Spectrum 21 Cinemas (and a 3D IMAX), Improv Comedy Club, plus a whimsical Carousel and a 108-foot Giant Ferris Wheel. If your tastes are more eclectic, the Un-Mall is only 20 minutes away in Costa Mesa. It has a sculpture garden and hipster oriented shops.

Theme Parks and Orange County Fair

The greater Los Angeles area is home to a wide variety of theme parks, including the original Disneyland and the newer Disney's California Adventure park. These are located in Anaheim, which is a short distance from our event venue in Irvine. Just slightly farther away is Knott's Berry Farm, which is the 12th most visited theme park in North America. It's a large amusement park that offers a mix of roller coasters, water rides and dark rides. Universal Studios (which includes the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter), is another major theme park located in North Hollywood, about an hour long drive from Irvine. About the same distance away is Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. This is a smaller amusement park which has been featured in many films and offers excellent photographic opportunities. For roller coaster fans, Six Flags Magic Mountain is found just north of Los Angeles. With 19 roller coasters, Magic Mountain holds the world record for most roller coasters in an amusement park. Also within reach of our event venue is Raging Waters, one of the largest water parks in the state of California. And, about an hour south of Irvine is Legoland, which now includes a Sea Life Aquarium. Although the dates have not been formally announced, it is likely we will also be able to experience the Orange County Fair during our event. It has animal displays, rides, big name bands, commercial displays, and all the things you expect at a county fair. It is around 15 minutes from our hotel.

The Arts

One glimpse of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts -- a compound of beautifully modern theaters and halls, anchored by the massive, sculptural glass and steel waveform of the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall -- and you quickly understand that Orange County and Irvine are places where arts and culture thrive.

Visitors to our last southern California convention will remember the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, which offers a month of craft making, live music and art displays. If you find yourself in Laguna Beach at night, you will have the chance to visit the Pageant of the Masters, the largest Tableau event in North America.

While you can always find blockbuster events at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre and the Bren Center on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, even small community playhouses, like Irvine's Musical Theatre Village, sell out their highly-polished productions. Of course, first class theatre is available throughout the LA area with its surplus of great actors.

Creative-minded visitors can also find an outlet for their inspirations at the Irvine Fine Arts Center, which offers classes for kids and adults in everything from cooking to ceramics, many of which are single-session classes perfect for visitors.

Irvine Museums

Irvine offers a variety of fun attractions and things to do. A couple of highlights you don't want to miss are the The Irvine Museum, the Marconi Automotive Museum or the Irvine Historical Museum, located in the San Joaquin Ranch House and commissioned by James Irvine. And, for all the kids in your group, don't miss Pretend City Children's Museum, a magical and interactive "city." If you venture to LA, we highly recommend the LA County Art Museum, the Broad and the Getty. There is a small chance that the LA County Art Museum will have its planned 3D photography exhibition ready by then.

While you are here, you can enjoy watching the major league baseball team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, roll over their opposition. The stadium is less than half an hour from the hotel.
