Excursion # 3

Sunday afternoon, July 29 - half day.
Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Sawdust Art Festival

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Great Park Balloon has been grounded until further notice, so the previously scheduled trip to Great Park has been changed. Our itinerary will begin at the Mission San Juan Capistrano and proceed to Laguna Beach.

Located in the old town of San Juan Capistrano, and established in 1776, the mission contains lavish gardens, fountains, and the adobe mission architecture. The grounds are home to swallows that migrate each spring from Argentina, as well as hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies. Historic exhibits of colonial living quarters, as well as Native American, religious, and military artifacts are on display. Self-guided digital audio tours are included. Time permitting, explore the neighboring Los Rios Street shops and the 1895 Santa Fe Railroad station.

The Sawdust Art Festival annual summer show showcases the fine art and crafts of over 200 Laguna Beach artists. Since 1966, the festival offers a mix of art media from hand-blown and fused glass, painting, surf art, ceramics, textiles, photography, and much, much more. Live entertainment, food and drink, and live art demonstrations (including glass blowing) are available. One of our LA Club members, Irene Suess (who is also a Sawdust Art Festival artist) will give an introduction to the festival when we arrive. Photography of the grounds is permitted, however ask the artistsŐ permission before taking photos, and if they are not there do not take them.

Departs 2:30 PM; 8:00 PM approximate return. Cost: $35.

Snacks and light meals are on your own, within a block of the mission, or at the Sawdust Festival.

Excursion #4

Monday, July 30 - full day.
Los Angeles Downtown Architecture Tour and Dreamworks Animation Studio in Glendale, CA

Tour stunning architectural landmarks of downtown Los Angeles. This guided walking tour begins at the historic Bradbury building (used as a set in many movies and television productions). Other stops include the ultra modern Disney Concert Hall (noted for Frank O. Gehry's iconic stainless steel exterior, and the current home of the LA Philharmonic), a ride on the restored Angel's Flight, (a funicular dating back to 1901), the Grand Street Market, and the stunning, contemporary Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels. After the walking tour, cool down at a private screening of short 3D movie clips at the Downtown Independent Theater.

Lunch on your own in Glendale, location to be determined.

The Monday LA excursion culminates at our final destination, the DreamWorks Animation Studio, in Glendale. We will tour the facility responsible for producing most of the highest quality, computer-generated animation that is available in 3-d format.

Departure 8:00 AM; return approximately 5:30 PM. Cost: $58.
Due to the need for DreamWorks to know in advance how many are coming, deadline for signing up for this trip is Friday, July 20.
